Vasant Panchami welcomes the spring season and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, deity of learning, music and the arts. It is a popular day to begin a child’s education (Vidyarambh or Akshar Abhyasam), to start learning music, and for ceremonies such as weddings, since many families regard the whole day as auspicious. Yellow, the colour of mustard fields in bloom, is associated with the day.
Rituals
- Wear yellow or white and place books, pens and instruments before Saraswati for blessing.
- Offer yellow flowers, kesari rice or boondi, and recite Saraswati Vandana.
- Children write their first letters; students avoid study on the day in some homes while their books are being worshipped.
- Kite flying is popular in parts of Punjab and North India.
