Makar Sankranti 2027 date and sankranti moment
Makar Sankranti 2027: Friday, 15 January 2027
Makar Sankranti is the day the Sun enters sidereal Capricorn (Makara). In 2027 the transit happens at 9:14 PM on Thursday, 14 January (New Delhi, as listed by Drik Panchang). Because it occurs after sunset, the punya kaal for bath and charity moves to the next day, so Makar Sankranti is observed on Friday, 15 January 2027. (Our own calculation places the moment a few minutes earlier, which does not change the date.)

Significance
Makar Sankranti marks the start of the Sun’s northward journey (Uttarayana) in traditional reckoning and the harvest of winter crops. It is one of the few Hindu festivals set by the solar calendar, which is why it falls on 14 or 15 January almost every year. Holy dips at Prayagraj, Haridwar and Gangasagar, charity of sesame, jaggery, blankets and khichdi, and kite flying are among its best-known customs.
For the 2026 festival and the full set of customs, see Makar Sankranti 2026.
