Significance
Snakes (nagas) hold an important place in Hindu tradition: Shesha Nag supports Vishnu, Vasuki encircles Shiva’s neck, and Krishna subdued the serpent Kaliya. On Nag Panchami families worship the naga devatas for protection of the household and for fertile fields during the monsoon, and in many homes digging the soil is avoided for the day.
Rituals
- Draw or place an image of a naga (with sandal paste, turmeric or cow dung) at the entrance or in the puja room and worship it with flowers, roli, rice and durva.
- Offer milk, kheer or sweets at a naga temple or anthill; animal-welfare groups ask that milk not be fed to live snakes.
- Many keep a fast and listen to the Nag Panchami katha.
- Large fairs are held at the Nagchandreshwar temple in Ujjain (opened only on this day).
