Significance

“Hariyali” means greenery: the festival celebrates the monsoon and the reunion of Shiva and Parvati, whose long penance won Shiva as her husband. Married women pray for marital happiness and a long life for their husbands, and unmarried girls pray for a good partner. It is celebrated widely in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab; Jaipur’s Teej procession is well known.
