Significance
“Akshaya” means imperishable: good deeds, charity and purchases begun on this day are believed to bring lasting results. It is one of the few days considered auspicious throughout (a swayam-siddha muhurat), so weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures are commonly planned on it. Parashurama Jayanti, the birth of Vishnu’s sixth avatar, is observed a day earlier in 2027, on Saturday, 8 May. Tradition also links the day to the start of the Treta Yuga and to Ved Vyasa beginning the Mahabharata with Ganesha as scribe.
Rituals
- Worship Vishnu and Lakshmi with tulsi, yellow flowers and chana dal-jaggery offerings.
- Donate water pots (matka), fans, grain, clothes or food; charity is the heart of the day.
- Buy gold, silver or other assets if you wish, preferably while Tritiya prevails.
- In Odisha, construction of the Rath Yatra chariots begins; Jain devotees break the year-long Varshitap fast.
