Vat Savitri is kept on two different days depending on the calendar your family follows. In the Purnimanta calendar of North India (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi) it falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya; in the Amanta regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India it is Vat Purnima, on Jyeshtha Purnima. 2026 had an Adhika (extra) Jyeshtha month from mid-May to mid-June, so the two observances were about six weeks apart this year.

Significance
The vrat honours Savitri, who, according to the Mahabharata’s account, followed Yama and through her devotion and wisdom won back the life of her husband Satyavan. Married women fast and worship the banyan (vat) tree, which is associated with longevity and with the Trimurti, praying for their husband’s long life and family well-being.
Vrat vidhi
- Fast from sunrise; dress in festive clothes and gather puja items: water, roli, rice, flowers, soaked chana, fruits and raw cotton thread.
- Worship the banyan tree, offer water at its roots and wind raw thread around the trunk while walking around it (often 7 or 108 times).
- Listen to or read the Savitri–Satyavan katha and seek blessings from elders.
- Break the fast as per family custom, often with soaked chana and fruit.
