Significance

The day is dedicated to the guru, the teacher who removes the darkness of ignorance. It is also called Vyasa Purnima, honouring Maharishi Ved Vyasa, traditionally credited with arranging the Vedas and composing the Mahabharata and the Puranas. Buddhists mark it as the day the Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, and Jain communities also observe it. Guru Purnima comes soon after Devshayani Ekadashi, early in the Chaturmas period when many monks stay in one place and teach.
