Significance
Married women keep a nirjala (waterless) fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and well-being of their husbands; many unmarried women also observe it. The day is linked to the story of Queen Veeravati and to Karwa, a devoted wife whose prayers are said to have saved her husband from a crocodile. It is widely celebrated in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh.
Rituals at a glance
- Sargi, a pre-dawn meal often given by the mother-in-law, before sunrise.
- Evening puja of Gauri (Parvati), Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya with the karwa (clay pot), and listening to the Karwa Chauth katha in a group.
- After moonrise, view the moon through a sieve, offer arghya, then see the husband’s face and break the fast with water from him.
