Kartik Purnima 2027 date and Purnima tithi
Kartik Purnima 2027: Sunday, 14 November 2027
Kartik Purnima is the full moon that closes the holy month of Kartik. In 2027 Purnima tithi begins at 9:55 AM on 13 November and ends at 8:55 AM on 14 November (New Delhi). Purnima is the sunrise tithi on the 14th, so the holy bath (Kartik snan) and daan are on Sunday, 14 November. Purnima prevails through the evening and moonrise of the 13th, so Dev Deepawali and the Purnima fast kept with moonrise worship fall on Saturday, 13 November.
| Item | Time (IST) |
|---|---|
| Purnima tithi (New Delhi) | 9:55 AM (13 Nov) – 8:55 AM (14 Nov) |
| Dev Deepawali Pradosh muhurat (Varanasi), 13 Nov | 5:11 PM – 7:48 PM |
Dev Deepawali
In 2027 Dev Deepawali is on the evening of Saturday, 13 November, because Purnima prevails during Pradosh that evening but ends at 8:55 AM on the 14th. The ghats of Varanasi are lit with lakhs of diyas for the “Diwali of the gods”, believed to celebrate Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura (hence the name Tripurari Purnima). Ganga aarti, boat processions and fireworks draw large crowds; the Pradosh muhurat above is calculated for Varanasi.
Significance and observances
- Kartik snan, the holy dip in the Ganga or another river at dawn, completes the month-long Kartik vrat; Pushkar, Garhmukteshwar, Haridwar and Prayagraj hold large fairs.
- Deep daan: lamps floated on rivers and lit at temples.
- Sikh communities celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Purab (Gurpurab) on Kartik Purnima; check the date announced by your gurdwara.
- Jains mark the day with pilgrimage to Palitana (Shatrunjaya), and Odisha celebrates Boita Bandana, floating small boats in memory of its ancient sea traders.
- The day is also linked with Vishnu’s Matsya avatar in some traditions.
