Significance
Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati, is the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings, wisdom and prosperity; he is worshipped first in every puja. The public, ten-day Ganeshotsav was popularised in Maharashtra by Lokmanya Tilak in the 1890s and is now celebrated across India and abroad. Tradition holds that seeing the moon on this Chaturthi can bring a false accusation (mithya dosh), based on the story of Krishna and the Syamantaka jewel.
Rituals
- Bring home a Ganesha idol (eco-friendly clay is encouraged) and perform pranapratishtha and shodashopachara puja in the madhyahna muhurat.
- Offer modak, durva grass, red flowers and laddoos; sing the aarti “Sukhkarta Dukhharta” morning and evening.
- Keep the idol for 1½, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days as per family custom; the tenth-day visarjan is on Anant Chaturdashi.
