Significance
“Anant” means endless: the day is dedicated to Vishnu in his infinite form, Ananta, resting on the serpent Shesha. The vrat is linked in tradition to the story of Kaundinya and Sushila, and to the Pandavas, whom Krishna advised to observe it during their exile. In Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and other regions, Anant Chaturdashi is best known as the final day of Ganeshotsav, when Ganesha idols installed on Ganesh Chaturthi are taken in procession for visarjan with the call “Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya” (come back soon next year).
Rituals
- Worship Vishnu as Ananta, often with a darbha-grass figure of Shesha, and offer fourteen kinds of items where the custom is followed.
- Tie the Anant sutra, a cotton or silk thread with fourteen knots dyed in turmeric or saffron, on the arm (men on the right, women on the left) after the puja.
- Many observe a fast and eat one meal without salt.
- Ganesh Visarjan processions with music and aarti; eco-friendly idols and artificial ponds reduce harm to rivers and lakes.
