Significance
Sharad Purnima marks the end of the monsoon and is traditionally said to be the one night of the year when the moon shines with all sixteen kalas (phases of perfection). Its moonlight is believed to have nourishing qualities, which is why kheer is kept under the open sky overnight. In the Bhagavata tradition this is the night of Krishna’s Maha Raas with the gopis in Vrindavan. “Kojagara” comes from “ko jagarti?” (“who is awake?”), the question Goddess Lakshmi is said to ask as she visits homes on this night, blessing those who stay awake in devotion.
How to observe it
- Many keep a day-long fast and worship Lakshmi (and Chandra, the moon) in the evening.
- Prepare rice kheer and place it in moonlight, covered with a fine cloth, then eat it as prasad the next morning.
- Kojagara Lakshmi Puja in Bengal, Odisha and Assam (Kojagori Lokkhi Puja), with night-long vigil and bhajans.
- Kumar Purnima in Odisha, when unmarried girls pray for a good husband; also Valmiki Jayanti in many regions.
